How many times can you sit the GAMSAT?

There is no limit on how many times you can sit the GAMSAT. You can take it as often as you like — but each sitting costs a fee and a chunk of your year, so the real question is whether re-sitting is worth it. Here's what you need to know.

How often it runs

The GAMSAT is offered twice a year — typically a March sitting and a September sitting. That cadence means you can usually re-sit within months rather than waiting a full year, though you'll register and pay each time.

How long a score lasts

Since late 2022, a GAMSAT result is valid for four years in Australia (it remains two years in the UK and Ireland). So a strong score can cover several application cycles in Australia — worth remembering before you assume you need to re-sit.

Which score do universities use?

Here's the detail people most often get wrong: if you have more than one current score, you can generally apply with your best one — there's no rule forcing you to use your most recent sitting. When you submit through GEMSAS you choose which result to send.

That's reassuring: a weaker re-sit doesn't automatically replace a stronger earlier score. Still, check each program's policy directly, since combination rules and thresholds differ by university.

Should you re-sit?
